Announcing our August Fort George Brewery Feature

It’s somewhat uncommon to find a brewery that is most known for a collaborative brewing effort, but it would be hard to come up with a collaboration in the northwest that is more consistently coveted than Fort George’s annual 3-Way IPA. Fortunately, a deeper dig into the repertoire from Fort George renders a bevy of other delicious beers that demonstrate the brewery’s consistently high quality level. The range of delicious beers that Fort George produces have us excited to announce them as our featured brewery for the month of August.

Keeping History Alive in Astoria

Fort George Brewery exudes a strong sense for the history of their home in Astoria, Oregon. Named for the city’s moniker during the brief time that Astoria spent under British rule during the War of 1812, everything about the brewery is uniquely tied to the Northwest, and specifically to their hometown. They restored the historic Fort George building that was on the site of the original Fort Astoria settlement site, and now operate an entire little cultural center of types, complete with the brewery, restaurants, and a music venue.

The Beers From Fort George

The beer that Fort George produces is only distributed in the Northwest, and they are focused on using local ingredients wherever possible. The stable of core beers include hoppy favorites The Optimist and Vortex IPA, their muscular Cavatica Stout, and the refreshing Belgian-style Quick Wit. They also produce a range of taproom only and limited seasonal beers, lead by their 3-Way IPA, an annual collaboration with two other breweries.

Fort George 3-Way IPA

Let’s Have a 3-Way (IPA)

Fort George has worked with some of the country’s most exciting craft breweries over the course of time that they have been producing 3-Way IPA. Each year this beer has a little different style to it, but it has consistently been a favorite among craft beer drinkers in the Northwest. This year has probably been the most in-demand that I have seen, with retailers and bars having trouble keeping on shelves or taplists. This year’s version is a collaboration with Seattle’s Reuben’s Brews and Great Notion Brewing and represents the three brewery’s take on the popular hazy New England influenced style.

Our August Line-up and Kickoff Event

As always, we will be featuring a mixture of seasonal and core beers for our Fort George feature. There will be some rotation as we work our way through the month, but here are the beers that we will be starting off the month with –

  • Quick Wit Beligian-Style Wheat
  • Sucker Punch Sour Ale
  • Shady Grove (Collaboration with Finnriver Farm and Cidery)
  • Vortex IPA
  • 3-Way IPA
  • Cavatica Stout

We will have Fort George rep, Hoyt Smith, on hand for our kickoff event on August 3rd from 6-8pm. You can try all 6 Fort George beers for $10 ($5 for our club members.) This is going to be a fun feature, and some of these beers won’t last long, so you’ll want to try to make the kickoff event. We look forward to seeing you and to pouring you some delicious Fort George beer in August!

July Beer Club Beers are Here!

It’s hard to believe that it is already July. The summer is flying by, and the temperatures are soaring. Good thing there’s beer to keep you cool.

With the advent of a new month, we have finished ringing up the beers for the July beer club. This month’s club shipments are almost exclusively made up of beers that we brought over directly from Seattle, and that you won’t find anywhere else in Spokane. We brought home beers from a couple of Colorado breweries, Trinity and Trve (pronounced True, but they are just too metal for traditional spelling), Engine House No. 9 from Tacoma, Wild Ride Brewing from Redmond, OR, and Drakes Brewing in California.

We have a limited amount of some of these beers that are available exclusively to club members, so let me know if you are interested in extras of anything, or if you would like to snag one of the beers that wasn’t included in your allocation this month. We will also be doing a tasting of several of the beers for this month’s club allocations on Thursday, July 20th, so you will have a chance to try some of the other beers that weren’t included in your allocation. You can RSVP for the tasting here.

Here are notes for all of the beer club beers for the month (Select “July Beer Club Bottles” from menu) –

New Shipment of Rusty Nail Now in Stock

We have had a hell of a time getting our full allocation of Fremont Brewing’s Rusty Nail this year, but we finally got the last of our shipment in today. If you are interested in snagging some, please let me know. We are limiting these to two bottles per person. Reservations are available exclusively to beer club members, but I can only hold them for one day. Let me know if you would like me to hold some back for you.

National ROSÉ Day – Drink Pink Spokane

One of my goals in life is that everyone appreciates the joy of Rosé. Having been serving pink wine to people for nearly 10 years I’ve seen all kinds of reactions from squished noses, hand in my face, to the snooty, “I don’t drink blush.” Well, hell, we don’t blame you, we don’t drink blush either! Rosé is a refined wine intentionally made for summer quaffing, summer food pairing and should just be declared the water of the summer season!

The second Saturday of June is a holiday, quite possibly a global event, dedicated to evangelizing the masses on the powers of drinking pink. Rosé is made from either the free run juice of a red wine grape or a lightly pressed run of juice after minimal skin contact (from 6-24 hours). The juice of a red wine grape is clear, it is the skin contact that gives it color. Your bold red wines stay in contact with the skin for a period of 7 to 30 days depending on the wine makers preference and style. With the minimal skin contact the juice is extracting some flavor from the skin while maintaining a crispness and acidity from the juice. Once that juice is pressed it goes through the fermentation process and is usually made dry or bone dry with zero to 2% residual sugar. So, traditional Rosé is NOT SWEET.

Popular grapes to make Rosé with are Grenache, Syrah, and Sangiovese, however winemakers can experiment and make Rosé from any red wine grape.

Join us the second Saturday in June. We will have 6 Rosé from around the world available for glass pours and a flight of 3. All bottles of Rosé will be 15% off to take home. Retail prices are only $10.99 to $19.99 per bottle so stock up on your summer water!

For Those Who Can’t Wait – Stone Enjoy By 10.31.15 IPA

I don’t like to wait for things. I see the things, I want the things…all of the things…now. It’s not that I think that impatience is a virtue, but my impulse control and I have gotten pretty comfortable with each other over the years.

They say thEnjoy By IPA Bottlesat, “good things come to those who wait,” but there are some of us who just aren’t any good at waiting. We should have good things too, and thankfully, sometimes good things also come to those who don’t (or can’t) wait.

Stone Enjoy By 10-31-15 IPAOne of America’s most loved and well known craft breweries is Stone Brewing Company. Stone was founded in 1996 by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner in San Marcos, CA. The brewery is known for a great stable of year-round beers, including their IPA and Ruination Double IPA, but are possibly most well known for their Arrogant Bastard and their seasonal and limited release beers. Thankfully, one of these beers is specifically designed for those of us who are patience challenged.

Enjoy By…

Throughout the course of the year, Stone releases a line of beers whose name also serves as an instruction for the perfect time to consume the beer for optimum drinking pleasure; the Enjoy By IPA. The latest release in the Enjoy By series has dropped, and this Frighteningly Fresh brew is recommended to be consumed by 10.31.15, which means that you have until Halloween to crush this bad boy within the recommended window. The Stone Brewing website even features a counter that will help you track the ideal drinking window; you know, in case you are one of those people who does actually like to wait until the last possible moment.

Enjoy By IPA

Hoppy & High Octane

This Double IPA is a big beer (9.4% ABV), but it is remarkably balanced for such a high octane brew. It’s mixture of over a dozen different kinds of hops is definitely fresh, and brings a broad range of hop aromatics and flavors to the table, gently nestled in a blanket of malty goodness.

If you are the type of person who is waiting-averse, the Stone Enjoy By 10.31.15 IPA is a beer that not only doesn’t have to be waited on, it is actually recommended not to. As the label says, “There is no better time than right now to enjoy this beer.”
